Workshop Description:

Spousal bereavement is considered the most stressful life experience persons confront across the lifespan. The highest reported COVID-19 death rates among persons 65 plus and rapidly expanding aging population heightens the potential that social workers in diverse settings will encounter bereaved older adult women. Drawing on the meaning reconstruction approach, this workshop discusses the function of spirituality in the well-being of later life widows and best practice methods of care. The interactive learning opportunity includes a small group case study activity.  

 
Learning Objectives:

1. Compare and contrast religiosity and spirituality.
2. Describe the function of spirituality in the health of bereaved older adult women.
3. Construct a case study in small groups focusing on a spiritual issue that a bereaved older adult woman may experience.
4. Demonstrate application of the meaning reconstruction approach to practice.

Social Work- This workshop has been approved by the NASW Ohio Chapter for 3 Social Work CEUs.

 U.S. Census Bureau estimates by 2034 persons over the age of 65 will outnumber those under 18 in the United States. The nation’s rapidly expanding aging population heightens the potential that social workers in diverse settings will encounter bereaved older adults. This interactive and case-based workshop discusses older adults death-related losses and unique bereavement overload experiences. Drawing on the dual process model, the knowledge and skill advancement opportunity will include best practice strategies and practical methods for empowering bereaved adults.

 
Learning Objectives:

1. Explain four death-related losses specific to older adults.
2. Identify two biopsychosocial or spiritual characteristics of each type of death-related loss.
3. Construct a case study focusing on an older adult’s bereavement experience.
4. Demonstrate application of the dual process model to practice.

Workshop Description:

Practitioners’ end of life communication practices influence the quality of care and bereavement experience for terminally ill patients and their families. This interactive and experiential workshop explores the latest research in end of life communication strategies for healthcare providers. These communication skills and process tasks form the basis of a small group role-play of a practitioner conveying health or treatment status changes to a terminally ill adult or their family. The knowledge and skill development opportunity will include practical approaches for incorporating the strategies into practice with culturally diverse patients and families.

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the relevance of the latest end of life communication strategies to quality care.
2. Explain the seven themes of communication strategies to incorporate into end of life conversations.
3. Compose an interaction with a terminally ill adult or their family using the strategies in a small group role-play format.

Workshop Description:

 The nation’s racially and ethnically diverse population is progressively becoming the rising majority. Social workers in diverse settings increasingly encounter persons of multicultural dissent navigating life-threatening illnesses or mourning the death of a loved one. Providing competent well-being advancing care requires that practitioners hold an understanding of diverse end-of-life and bereavement practices. This interactive and experiential workshop discusses the four prominent minority groups beliefs and death-related practices. These populations form the basis of a small group case study of a practitioner engaging with an individual navigating a spousal, sibling, or child death. Emphasis will also include the connection between practitioner self-awareness and culturally sensitive practice in differing sociocultural contexts.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the death-related beliefs of the four prominent minority groups.
2. Compare and contrast the death-related practices of the four prominent minority groups.
3. Summarize personally one’s attitude towards death, appropriate expressions of grief, death-related practices.
4. Construct a case study of an interaction with a culturally diverse bereaved adult.
